"The fruit in my paintings becomes a meditation, because I focus so intently on it," Ms. Connor said as she described a richly hued painting (right) of a compote bowl of apples. "I think people enjoy [my paintings] because they're so recognizable. I try to capture a moment in time and keep it, so that many years from now people will look at it and have the same type of experience as when it was first painted."
